Verne Research Center was a city-sized underwater marine institute in the Pacific Ocean, two hundred miles west of Chile. It had not yet been finished, and was destroyed by newly discovered carnivorous sea creatures.

- From a real-world point of view, the research center is named after Jules Verne, who wrote the classic novel, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
