Dr. Quest: Hmm, yes, it sounded like Japanese to me.
[Jonny, Hadji, and Race all high-five.]
Dr. Quest: Now, let's here it in Portuguese.
Iris the computer: Jessie Bannon at front door.
Jonny: Open front door.
Jessie: Hi, gang. You guys missed a great movie. Here, dad. I got you something.
Race: Thanks, sweetheart. What is it?
Jessie: A surprise. Don't open it till I leave.
[Bandit sniffs at Jessie and whimpers. Jessie leaves.]
Race: Jessie...
[Bandit growls and grabs the present.]
Race: Bandit, let go.
Jonny: Bandit, what's wrong with you? Cut it out, boy!
[Jonny pulls Bandit and Race pulls the gift until the package tears, revealing a device counting down.]
Hadji: No!
[Race grabs it and throws it out the window. It explodes. Jonny pets Bandit.]
Jonny: Good, boy.
Race: Jessie... Jessie!
[Runs to the front door, after Jessie.]
Race: Jessie, what's going...
[The airstream, driven by Jessie, makes a sharp turn and speeds toward the entrance.]
Iris the computer: Intruder approaching.
Dr. Quest: Move!
[They get out of the way. The airstream crashes through the wall.]
Iris the computer: Malfunction.
[The airstream crashes through the next wall and over a balcony. Jessie jumps from the vehicle as it plunges over the side of the cliff into the Atlantic. She clings to the cliff's edge. She starts to lose consciousness. Race grabs her wrist as she loses her grip.]
Race: Hang on.
[Race pulls her up and Dr. Quest helps.]
Dr. Quest: I've got her.
[They lay her down. She's unconscious.]
Race: Jessie, please....
Act 1[]
Quest Compound[]
[Jessie lays on a couch, muttering in her sleep. Dr. Quest places sensors on her.]
Jessie: I must destroy them. Must destroy them.
Race: What's wrong with her?
Dr. Quest: Nothing physical. But look at this reading. She has two distinctive thought patterns. Her basic personality and an intrusive one.
Hadji: You mean, she has been brainwashed?
Dr. Quest: That's my guess.
Race: But that's impossible. She was only in town a few hours. Brainwashing like this takes weeks.
Dr. Quest: Normally, yes. But if the programming was implanted directly into her mind...
Hadji: Virtual reality equipment could do that, but...
Dr. Quest: Yes, that's got to be it.
Race: Surd.
Dr. Quest: If you're right, we don't have much time.
[Dr. Quest picks up Jessie and they leave.]
Lighthouse[]
[Still unconscious, Jessie is placed in the reclining chair with the QuestWorld VR Headset on. Dr. Quest checks the monitors.]
Dr. Quest: I was afraid of this. The Jessie we know is in serious danger.
Race: Meaning what?
Dr. Quest: Her evil persona's getting stronger by the minute. I'll have to use the VR equipment to venture into Jessie's subconscious.
Jonny: Don't worry, Race. We'll save Jess.
Hadji: Please keep in contact. I can retrieve you at a moment's notice if necessary.
[Dr. Quest and Jonny both sit in the other reclining chairs with the QuestWorld VR Headest. Hadji types at the computer.]
Dr. Quest: Will do. Ready whenever you are.
Hadji: I am starting the sequence now.
Jonny: Going hot.
Questworld[]
Jonny: Activate hoverboards now. Ha ha hoo! Jessie's noggin, here we come. Are you okay, dad?
[Dr. Quest waves to Jonny. They ride the hoverboards down.]
Jonny: Looks like Jessie's got computers on the brain.
Dr. Quest: Yes, I suspect everything we see here will be symbolic of Jessie's deepest thoughts.
[They look around. Dr. Quest points to a portal.]
Dr. Quest: There! I'm certain that's what we're looking for.
[They fly through the portal. Lightning strikes around them.]
Dr. Quest: It's trying to defend itself from us.
Jonny: Look out! I don't like the look of that cloud.
Dr. Quest: Agreed. Let's fly around it.
[Lightning strikes, and Dr. Quest loses his hoverboard and falls.]
Jonny: Dad!
[Jonny tethers Dr. Quest's hoverboard and goes after him.]
Jonny: I'm coming, dad.
[Jonny catches Dr. Quest on his hoverboard before Dr. Quest falls into a lava-like ground. Dr. Quest jumps back onto his hoverboard. They continue on.]
Dr. Quest: Good work, son. I think we're almost there.
[They pass through a barrier and emerge, but it's no longer typical Questworld.]
Jessie's mind[]
Jonny: Why have we transformed, dad? This looks like both virtual reality and the real world.
Dr. Quest: The rules of reality must work differently inside the subconscious mind.
[They push open large doors and enter a new setting.]
Jonny: Oh, great. This looks fun.
Dr. Quest: It's definitely Surd's style.
Quest Compound[]
[A helicopter has landed and several men with guns approach the Lighthouse. Inside the Lighthouse, Hadji continues to monitor Jonny and Dr. Quest. The screen fritzes.]
Jonny: Hadji, do you read me? Man, you should see this place.
Hadji: I cannot. Just as you approached that castle, my visual monitors lost you.
Dr. Quest: That doesn't sound good. Hadji, can you send in some defensive gear?
Hadji: I have just the thing. Stand still.
[Dr. Quest and Jonny are both equipped with swords and shields.]
Dr. Quest: These energy swords should pack a wallop.
[Dr. Quest and Jonny cut through the door and enter.]
Jonny: Let's move, dad. Jessie's counting on us.
Dr. Quest: Keep your eyes open.
Jonny: The decoration in this place stinks.
Surd: That's a matter of opinion, boy.
Dr. Quest: I was wondering when you'd make your big entrance, Surd. Using Jessie to draw us here was low... even for you.
Surd: Actually, I was expecting Mr. Bannon to take the bait and save his beloved daughter. But no matter. Your demise will hurt him enough for my purposes.
[Surd laughs and snaps his fingers. The "decorations" on the windows materialize into warrior robots. They jump down and surround Dr. Quest and Jonny.]
Dr. Quest: Hadji, come in.
Surd: Oh, please, doctor. Give me some credit. Do you actually think I'd go to all this trouble if you could just jump back to the real world like one of your video games? I've taken care of business on both sides of Quest World. Right, Lorenzo?
[In the Lighthouse, Lorenzo and his men have taken control. Race and Hadji are held at gunpoint.]
Lorenzo: Things are under control, boss. You know, they really should beef up the lighthouse security.
Surd: What is that expression? The mind is a terrible thing to waste.
[Laughing, Surd snaps his fingers and the warrior robots rush Dr. Quest and Jonny.]
Act 2[]
Jonny: Going up.
[Jonny and Dr. Quest lift into the air on their hoverboards, out of reach of the robot warriors.]
Surd: What?
[Jonny and Dr. Quest fight and defeat the warriors. Jonny rushes the throne where Surd sits.]
Surd: Julia, now.
[Surd disappears.]
Jonny: No!
Surd's hideout[]
[Surd has logged out of Questworld. Julia monitors Questworld onscreen.]
Surd: Blast that boy! I didn't allow for him being there.
Julia: He's well-adapted to the VR world. I'll just send more warriors after them.
Surd: No. I have something far more creative in mind. Time for phase two, Julia.
Julia: Yes. Lorenzo, come in.
Lorenzo: [onscreen] I'm here.
Julia: Proceed to phase two.
Lorenzo: Ready. Ah, you're gonna like this, Bannon cause it is really nasty.
Questworld[]
Dr. Quest: Too much open ground. Surd's warriors will be here any second.
Jonny: This way.
Dr. Quest: What now?
Jonny: Let's try that tower. Jessie told me that she loved those goofy fairytales when she was a kid and captured princesses are always in a tower.
[They fly into the top of the tower and find Jessie doing chemistry.]
Jessie: Sorry, gentlemen, I have no time for visitors. Not if I'm going to win the Nobel Prize.
Jonny: What's going on?
Dr. Quest: Her dream is to be a world-famous scientist. This place obviously represents her future desires.
Jonny: Jess.
Jessie: The problems of the world need solving. Disease, hunger, crime, war. I can eliminate them all.
Dr. Quest: Jessie, listen to me. Surd has trapped you here. He made this place to keep your mind distracted and used you like a puppet to attack us.
Jessie: Uh! I can't concentrate with all these interruptions. Guards!
[Surd's warriors appear and grab Dr. Quest and Jonny.]
Jonny: Tell them to let us go.
[Surd appears and laughs.]
Jonny: Save your breath, boy. She's too preoccupied with saving the world.
[Surd pats Jessie's head. She doesn't seem to notice.]
Dr. Quest: Surd, if you harm her...
Surd: Dr. Quest. Why, I'm hurt. Can't you see, all I've done is granted that poor girl her heart's desire? You should be more concerned about yourselves. You're not going to be so lucky.
[Surd snaps his fingers and two portals open. He points.]
Surd: In you go!
[The warriors throw Jonny and Dr. Quest into separate portals, and the portals close behind them. Surd laughs.]
Surd: Did you get all that?
Lorenzo: Sure did, boss. Now here's where the real fun begins.
Hadji: Where are you sending them?
Lorenzo: To face their worst nightmares. But don't take my word for it. See for yourselves.
Nightmares[]
[Jonny screams and lands on the other side of the portal. He appears alone.]
Jonny: Dad? Is anybody here?
[Dr. Quest falls through his portal into a separate space -- a graveyard. He walks forward.]
[In Jonny's nightmare, Dr. Quest appears.]
Jonny: Dad, what a relief. I thought...
Nightmare Dr. Quest: You've been a real disappointment, Jonathan.
Jonny: But, dad...
Nightmare Dr. Quest: Don't interrupt. This journey has really opened my eyes. Jessie's more like me than you'll ever be. Don't you see? She's the one following in my footsteps. Trying to be a real scientist. Not you.
[Jonny falls to his knees.]
Jonny: Dad, no. I've tried to be like you.
Nightmare Dr. Quest: She's the one. [echoing] Not you.
[Meanwhile, Dr. Quest walks through the graveyard.]
Nightmare Jonny: Looking for me, father?
Dr. Quest: What?
[Dr. Quest turns, but there's no one there. Just headstones.]
Nightmare Jonny: I'm right here. We all our.
[The headstones of Jonny, Jessie, Hadji, and Race are on the ground. Their faces all carved into their headstones.]
Dr. Quest: Jonny. No!
Nightmare Jonny: You let us down, dad. Just like you let down my mother.
Dr. Quest: That's not true. I tried to save her.
Nightmare Jonny: Sure. Keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better.
Dr. Quest: No.
Nightmare Jonny: [echoing] You let us down, dad.
Surd's hideout / Lighthouse[]
[Surd laughs maniacally as he watches the monitor, showing Dr. Quest on his knees before the headstones.]
Julia: I've never seen you in such a good mood, Jeremiah. It's positively contagious. [laughs]
Surd: Too bad our guests seem immune to our good humor. Check on the others.
Julia: Lorenzo, report.
Lorenzo: It's goin' just like you planned. I gotta tell ya, I'm rather enjoying it but Bannon and Mr. Computer don't seem so thrilled.
Surd: (on screen) 'What a shame.
Lorenzo: Yeah. I'll keep you updated, boss.
Race: Too bad you don't have the guts to face me man-to-man.
Lorenzo: You know, you must think I'm some kind of fool, Bannon. So why don't you just sit back and enjoy your front-row seats?
[Hadji discreetly slips from his rope bindings and begins to untie Race.]
Lorenzo: [laughing] Enjoy the show, you two.
Henchman: Cause you're next.
Hadji: Hmm... perhaps. Perhaps not.
[Race slams one of the henchmen to the ground and takes down another. Lorenzo pulls out a gun but Hadji attacks him. They wrestle. Lorenzo reaches for his fallen gun, but a bullet ricochets it out of reach.]
Race: [holding a gun] Don't even think about it.
[Hadji punches Lorenzo.]
Hadji: His jaw is as hard as his head.
Nightmare[]
[At the Lighthouse, Hadji types quickly on the computer.]
Hadji: Dr. Quest, listen to me. What you are seeing isn't real. We are all alive. Surd is manipulating your emotions. You must master them.
Dr. Quest: An illusion. I must try to remember it's... not real.
Hadji: Jonny needs you. I can help you find him.
[At his hideout, Surd watches the monitor.]
Surd: No, I'm going in. You asked for it, Quest. No more psychological manipulation. Brute force it is.
[In his nightmare, he's still on his knees listening to the nightmare version of his father.]
Nightmare Dr. Quest: What a disappointment. If Race didn't save your miserable life every five minutes...
Dr. Quest: Disappointment? Ha, I've never heard of anything more ridiculous.
[Jonny turns to see him.]
Jonny: Dad?
Dr. Quest: No one talks to my son like that.
[Dr. Quest punches the nightmare Dr. Quest, which falls and dissolves.]
Jonny: Thanks, dad.
Dr. Quest: You really didn't believe that garbage, did you?
Jonny: No way.
Dr. Quest: Then let's get Jessie. I can't do it without you.
[Their gear rematerializes and they jump on their hoverboards.]
Jessie's mind tower[]
[Jessie is still "working" when Dr. Quest and Jonny arrive. Surd reappears.]
Surd: Sorry, doctor. Time to finish this the old-fashioned way. Primitive, but affective.
Dr. Quest: Primitive suits us just fine!
[They fight the warrior robots. Jonny gets to Jessie.]
Jonny: Jessie, listen to me.
Jessie: Not now. I'm about to solve the energy crisis. Hey!
Jonny: No, you're not. This isn't real. None of it is. You've got to wake up. Surd's using you, Jess. He's using your hopes and dreams to keep you captive.
Jessie: Don't be ridiculous.
Jonny: And while you were living in the fantasy he almost got you to destroy your own father.
Jessie: Dad? I could never...
Jonny: No, but Surd would. And he did.
[Dr. Quest destroys the last warrior and approaches Surd.]
Dr. Quest: Now it's just you and me.
Surd: As it should be.
Dr. Quest: You've endangered my family countless times and it ends now!
Surd: Julia, activate the program.
[Julia types into the computer. Surd's form increases in size and develops multiple arms and weapons.]
Surd: Your anger has made us evenly matched, doctor.
Dr. Quest: No!
Surd: As you said, this ends now, Quest!
Jessie: I don't think so!
[Surd is pulled away.]
Surd: No! How did you...
[Jessie has increased to even greater size and has lifted Surd. She breaks off his saw weapon and tosses it aside.]
Jessie: This is my head, you sicko. Figure it out.
[A portal opens and she throws Surd through it.]
Surd: No-o-o!
[Jessie kneels before Dr. Quest and Jonny and picks them up.]
Jessie: We have to get out of here. I promise to be gentle. Now, hang on.
[She flies them up out of the tower. They arrive back in Questworld.]
Jessie: It's coming apart at the seams.
Dr. Quest: Yes, your mind is erasing certain programming from your subconscious.
[Jonny drifts away.]
Jonny: Jessie!
Jessie: Hang on, Jonny!
[Jessie catches Dr. Quest, but Jonny slips away through a barrier.]
Jessie: No-o-o!
Jonny: Now, where am I? Jessie! Can you hear me? Dad! Come in. Jessie! Dad? Hadji!
[The world around him, and Jonny himself, begins to break apart.]
Jonny: Help! Help!
Jessie: Jonny-y-y!
[Jessie tethers him and pulls him up.]
Jessie: Hang on, Jonny!
Jonny: Way to go, Jess!
Jessie: Jonny, would you quit clowning around? We need to get home.
Jonny: Let's just get outta here.
[They get out of danger. Jessie sets them down gently and she shrinks back to regular size.]
Dr. Quest: Hadji, bring us home.
Hadji: With pleasure.
[The three of them log out of Questworld.]
Lighthouse[]
[The henchmen are tied up. Dr. Quest and Jonny get up. Race leans over Jessie.]
Race: Jessie... please.
Jonny: Hey, Jess. Come on, wake up.
Jessie: Does anyone have an aspirin?
[Jessie gets up and they all hug.]
Hadji: Thank goodness.
Quest Compound[]
[Back in the mansion, they inspect the damage.]
Jonny: Nice work, Jess. Oh, by the way, this is coming out of your allowance.
Jessie: Wow! I did all this? I don't remember a thing.
Race: It's probably just as well, kiddo.
Hadji: Jessie, I know Surd's lackeys are all in custody, but I was wondering...
Jessie: Yes?
Hadji: Well, when the authorities went to pick up Surd and Julia, he was in a total catatonic state. Where did you send his mind?
Jessie: Into QuestWorld... but with one slight difference.
Hadji: What do you mean?
Jessie: Remember, Dr. Quest gave a part of QuestWorld to Surd so he could have the illusion of full mobility as long as he's in virtual reality?
Hadji: Yes, I know. What did you do?
Jessie: I stripped away his freedom of movement in QuestWorld forever. Now, he's immobile in both worlds. No one messes with my family. No one.
