[An aircraft flies over water. The signal is picked up at a military base. Radar beeps.]
Radar technician: (over radio) Captain, I have a UFO that comes and goes. It just showed again, sir. Yes, sir.
Captain: Uh, could it be a rough sea?
Radar technician: No, sir. Whatever it is, it's moving at a high rate of speed.
Radar technician: Okay, I'm going to call a red scramble.
[Captain pushes a "Red Alert" button. Alarm blares. Jets Red One and Red Two take off.]
Red One: I have the bogey plain and clear. And I'm closing fast. Contact within eight minutes. Over.
Captain: Roger, Red One. Advise on contact. Over and out.
[Red One and Red Two approach the aircraft. The craft hides beneath the water as Red One and Red Two fly past.]
Red One: Red One to base. Reached contact point, and no bogey in sight. Request instructions. Over.
Captain: Well, whatever it was, it's gone now.
Radar Technician: Guess we were just picking up sea waves, sir.
Captain: Red One and Red Two, return to base. Over.
Red One: Roger. Wilco. Over and out.
[UFO proceeds over land. A driver is startled to see it fly past.]
Quest Laboratory[]
[The UFO slows over a secured facility with a high voltage fence. It lands and a light radiates from its location. A guard at the guard station sees the light.]
Guard: I wonder what that light is behind the dune. I better notify Dr. Quest.
[intercom buzzing]
Dr. Quest: Yes?
Guard: Something strange going on about 300 yards from the main gate, sir.
Dr. Quest: What is it?
Guard: Well, I-I don't know. It's a light of some kind, over behind a dune. Shall I have it investigated?
Dr. Quest: No. I'll get Race Bannon to take a look.
Guard: Yes, sir.
[Dr. Quest pushes a button on his control panel. A large ray gun moves into a secured storage area.]
[Dr. Quest and Race drive up to the guard station.]
Dr. Quest: Which way?
Guard: Over there, sir.
Dr. Quest: See it, Race?
Race: Yes, sir.
Dr. Quest: What do you make of it?
Race: I don't know.
Dr. Quest: We better have a look. Let's go.
Landing site[]
[ The dome on top of the UFO rolls back, and a large black "eye" emerges. Legs extend and the eye walks a few steps, then returns to the craft. The light fades. Dr. Quest and Race approach the site.]
Race: Did you see that, doctor? The light is gone.
[The car pulls toward the landing site.]
Race: Look.
Dr. Quest: What is it?
Race: I don't know, but it sure looks weird.
Dr. Quest: Let's have a closer look.
[Dr. Quest inspect the craft.]
Dr. Quest: You better go back and get the sand truck and winch.
Race: You're gonna staying here, doctor?
Dr. Quest: Yes. I'll keep an eye on it till you get back. Oh, Race, better bring along a floodlight or two.
Race: Okay. Be right back.
Dr. Quest: Well, stranger, where did you come from?
Quest Laboratory[]
[Race gets the truck. Inside their room, Jonny and Hadji are reading.]
Jonny: Say, Hadji, show me that levitation trick again, will ya?
Hadji: We're supposed to be doing homework, Jonny.
Jonny: Oh, come on. Just once more.
Hadji: Okay, we'll try it on Bandit. Sim-sim-salabim.
[Bandit levitates into the air. He yawns and rolls over.]
Hadji: Sim-sim-salabim.
Jonny: Hey, that's a great trick, Hadji.
Hadji: Bandit does not think so. He never woke up.
[They hear an engine revving outside.]
Hadji: What's that?
Jonny: I don't know. Something's going on.
Hadji: Hey, it's a tractor.
Jonny: Yeah, with Race. Hey, Race! Race! Race!
Hadji: He can't hear you.
Jonny: Come on. Let's head him off.
[The boys open the door to go. Bandit barks and runs after them.]
[Jonny and Hadji stands on the street with thumbs out as Race drives up.]
Race: Alright, what's with the thumbs?
Jonny: Ride, mister?
Hadji: Please?
[Bandit barks.]
Race: Okay, okay. Hop aboard.
Act 2[]
Landing site[]
[Dr. Quest sits near the craft, looking toward Race approaching in the truck. As he's looking away, the dome of the draft rolls back and the eye looks out, and then closes again before Dr. Quest looks back.]
Race: Okay, doctor. Here we are. I brought along a couple of hitchhikers.
Hadji: Hello, Dr. Quest.
Jonny: Hi, dad.
Dr. Quest: Okay, boys. I was wondering when you two would show up. Now you stay back while we look this thing over. Let's go, Race.
[Race and Dr. Quest approach the craft, and Hadji, Jonny, and Bandit hang back.]
Hadji: Aye, what is it?
Jonny: Wow, it looks like a spaceship.
Race: I better back the truck around and face the winch towards that thing.
[Bandit barks and eyes a rabbit.]
Hadji: What's the matter with Bandit?
Jonny: He sees a rabbit over there.
[Bandit growls at the rabbit.]
Jonny: I don't think he's afraid of you, Bandit.
Hadji: Perhaps he thinks you're another rabbit, Bandit.
[Both boys laugh. Bandit barks and approaches the rabbit, that runs away, kicking direct at him.]
Jonny: Those rabbits are fierce, Bandit.
Hadji: He is one ferocious rabbit.
[Both laugh.]
Dr. Quest: Quiet, boys. Listen, Race.
Race: I hear it. It's like a muffled heartbeat.
Dr. Quest: We better move back. No telling what it is.
Jonny: Scary, isn't it, Hadji?
Hadji: You said it, Jonny.
Jonny: Hey, look. The thing, look.
Race: It's opening.
Jonny: What is it, dad?
Dr. Quest: I don't know, Jonny. I really don't know. What do you think, Race?
Race: It's like nothing I've ever seen before.
[The dome of the craft rolls back.]
Race: Look, doctor. It's just like an eye.
Dr. Quest: Yes, it is.
Dr. Zin's castle[]
[Dr. Zin sees Dr. Quest and Race through a monitor, and laughs.]
Dr. Zin: Well, Dr. Quest is taking the bait. Just as I wanted.
Servant: Your food, Dr. Zin.
Dr. Zin: You brainless fool! Get out! And if you ever come in here again without knocking I'll have you flogged. Now, get out!
Servant: Yes, sir. Yes, sir.
[Servant leaves.]
Race: What do you make of it, Dr. Quest?
Dr. Quest: I don't know, but wherever it comes from it's the result of a brilliant mind.
Dr. Zin: [chuckles] You'll find out, Dr. Quest.
Race: What're you gonna do with it?
Dr. Quest: Well, the core seems to be the brain of this thing. Let's take it in for a closer look.
Dr. Zin: Exactly what I planned you would do. [laughs] And now, to sleep my little robot friend. [laughs]
Landing site[]
Jonny: Look, the eye. It's closing.
Hadji: Like it's going to sleep.
Dr. Quest: Alright. Let's pick it up, Race, and take it in with us.
[They take the eye back on the truck.]
Storage building[]
[The eye is placed in a storage building in Quest Laboratory.]
Dr. Quest: Okay, Race. Lower away. [to the Guard] Don't let anyone in that storage building. That thing may be dangerous.
Storage building guard: Yes, sir.
Dr. Quest: Alright, fellas. Let's go.
[The storage building door is shut.]
Research building[]
Dr. Quest: First thing in the morning, this Para-Power Ray gun is to be mounted on a flat trailer and hooked into the mobile generator. I want be ready for the field tests by 11:00 a.m.
Race: Right, doctor. But what about that thing in the storage building?
Dr. Quest: Now, that will have to wait till after the tests. Come on, let's have some coffee.
Storage building[]
[The eye opens and the legs extend. Two antennae raise. The guard stationed outside hears something.]
Storage building guard: What's going on in there?
[The guard opens the storage building door.]
Storage building guard: Alright, who's in there? I'm sure I heard something. What the... An eye!
[The eye attaches an antenna to the guard's forehead. He screams, but collapses, unconscious. The ey leaves the storage facility.]
Residence building[]
Hadji: I am very sleepy, Jonny.
Jonny: Oh, me too. Let's hit the hay.
Hadji: We study to learn and be smart but I think Bandit is the smartest. He sleeps while we study.
Jonny: Yeah. Well, five minutes more and then we'll quit, okay?
Hadji: [yawns] Okay.
[The eye walks down the street and looks into Jonny and Hadji's room. Bandit wakes up and barks at the eye outside the window.]
Hadji: What's wrong with him?
Jonny: I don't know.
[Jonny looks out the window, but the eye has lowered to hide under bushes.]
Jonny: What's the matter, Bandit? Having bad dreams about big bad rabbits?
Hadji: Maybe he heard one passing the window.
[Both laugh.]
Research building[]
[The eye continues, and attaches antennae to the side of a building. It hears what's said inside.]
Race: That Para-Power Ray, doctor. Just how much can it do?
Dr. Quest: To tell the truth, Race, I'm not sure. It should at the least be able to drain power from an object. A car, a light bulb, an airplane...
Race: Making them useless.
Dr. Quest: Temporarily useless.
Race: How does it work?
[In Dr. Zin's hideout, he listens to everything the eye is picking up.]
Dr. Quest: You might say, it magnetizes energy which is after all power.
Race: Quite a weapon.
Dr. Quest: Could be. Because it doesn't have to kill, just disarm an army or air force leaving it useless but alive.
Race: Well, I'm going to have a look around before I go to bed. Check security.
Dr. Quest: I'll go with you, Race. I need some fresh air.
[The eye retracts the antenna and leaves.]
Dr. Zin: Now, we make the move and in a few moments, the secret Para-Power Ray will belong to me. [laughs]
[The eye moves toward a building marked "Quest Laboratory". Inside, a guard (Tom) reads while on duty in a quiet hallway, outside doors marked "Dr. Quest. No admittance."]
Dr. Zin: [reading] "Dr. Quest. No admittance." Now, proceed carefully, my little robot friend. This is it. Easy. Easy. Now, your antenna. Ready, aim...
[Tom sees the robot eye approaches. He reaches for his weapon.]
Dr. Zin: ...fire!
[An antenna hits Tom in the forehead. He collapses, unconscious.]
Dr. Zin: Nice work, my friend. [laughs]
Act 3[]
Quest Laboratory patrol[]
Race: Well, doctor, everything seems to check out. Anything else before we turn in?
Dr. Quest: Yes, Race. The storage building.
Race: Want to check that thing we brought in?
Dr. Quest: Yes, it worries me.
[They drive to the storage building.]
Race: Where's the guard?
Dr. Quest: And the door's open. Let's look inside.
[Inside, they see the collapsed guard.]
Race: Look.
Dr. Quest: Get the light, Race.
Race: It's the guard.
Dr. Quest: Yes, Race. Looks like he's in shock.
[The guard groans and wakes.]
Race: Look, he's coming to.
Dr. Quest: Can you talk?
Storage building guard: I guess so.
Dr. Quest: What happened? Who stole the thing you were guarding?
Storage building guard: No one. It-it clobbered me.
Race: Clobbered you?
Dr. Quest: Do you know what you're saying?
Storage building guard: Yes, sir. It had legs like a giant spider, a-and an eye and two antennas sticking out the front and it touched me with one of them, and I was paralyzed.
Dr. Quest: Are you alright now?
Storage building guard: Yes, sir.
Dr. Quest: Then come with us. We've gotta find that thing and fast.
Quest Laboratory building[]
Dr. Zin: That's it, my friend. Look around. We'll find the Para-Power gun yet. Hold it. Let's have a closer look at that panel. That's it. The top button on your left. That's the one. Press it.
[The robot presses the button. The door to the Para-Power Ray opens.]
Dr. Zin: Ah-ha! There it is. Dr. Quest's new Para-Power gun. And now, my robot friend, pay attention. Approach it. Examine it. Learn it well so you can come back here with all its secrets safely stored in your memory cells. [laughs]
Quest Laboratory[]
Dr. Quest: Hold it, Race. No one is supposed to be in there.
Race: What is it?
Dr. Quest: There's a light in my lab. Come on. Let's check it out.
[Inside, they find the guard, Tom, unconscious.]
Race: Poor Tom. It got him too.
Dr. Quest: Yes, but where is it now?
[Dr. Quest looks into his lab.]
Dr. Quest: Race, come here.
Race: What is it, doctor?
Dr. Quest: Look.
[Race looks in. They see the robot eye examining the Para-Power Ray gun.]
Race: What do you make of it?
Dr. Quest: I don't know.
Dr. Zin: You have learned the power source, the range limitations, and circuitry. Now, I will bring you home so I can hear its secrets from you.
[The eye turns and sees Dr. Quest and Race.]
Dr. Zin: (over radio) Ah-ha! Good evening, Dr. Quest.
Dr. Quest: I know that voice. It's Dr. Zin.
Race: Zin?
Dr. Zin: Quite right. You like my secret agent?
Race: What is it?
Dr. Zin: Since you have no way of stopping it, I will tell you. It's my very latest invention. An electronic, uh, spy.
Dr. Quest: Spy?
Race: The Trojan Horse routine.
Dr. Zin: Correct. Once inside your laboratory it gathers information through these antenna and stores it in a memory bank and brings it back to me.
Dr. Quest: Very ingenious. Congratulations.
Race: Of course, it hasn't left yet.
Dr. Zin: No. It hasn't, but it will. Nothing can stop it. Let me demonstrate.
[The eye begins to leave. Race shoots at it, which has no effect. The eye breaks through the building wall.]
Dr. Quest: Guard, get tanks, flamethrowers, anything. That thing must be stopped.
Storage building guard: Yes, sir.
[Outside, the forces are prepared.]
Race: What if they can't stop it, doctor?
Dr. Quest: Then we'll use my Para-Power Ray gun.
Race: But you don't even know if it works. You haven't tested it yet.
Dr. Quest: We don't have a choice. We have to test it now. We've got to stop the robot.
Guard: Here it comes.
[They begin firing at the robot.]
Man: Fire! Fire!
[In their room, Hadji and Jonny are awakened from bed.]
Hadji: What's going on?
Jonny: It sounded like an explosion. Come on. Let's find dad.
[Gunfire continues.]
Guard: It's headed for the electrified fence. Swing around.
Man: Fire!
[The robot eye breaks through the electrified fence.]
Man: Fire!
Man: You, Jones, give it the flamethrower.
Jones: Yes, sir.
[The robot eye continues, despite ongoing gunfire and the flamethrower.]
Sergeant: We tried everything, Dr. Quest, but nothing seems to stop it.
Dr. Quest: Keep trying, sergeant.
Sergeant: Yes, sir.
Race: Okay, Race. Let's get back to the lab.
Race: Gonna try your Para-Power Ray, doctor?
Dr. Quest: There's no other way. We have to.
Man: Give it another blast.
Man: Fire! Fire!
[The robot eye reaches the landing site.]
Dr. Quest's lab[]
[Dr. Quest rolls out the Para-Power Ray.]
Dr. Quest: We haven't a second to lose, so you boys stay clear.
Jonny: Yes, sir.
Hadji: Yes, Dr. Quest.
Jones: It's no use. Nothing's gonna stop it.
Dr. Quest: Now we'll have to work fast. Jonny, you hook in that power line. Race, turn on the generators. Hadji, you handle the hydraulic pressure.
[At the landing site, the robot eye retracts its legs.]
Dr. Quest: Hurry up. We haven't much time.
Race: Will she fire?
Dr. Quest: I'm not getting a reading yet. More power.
[The aircraft lifts off.]
Jonny: Look! The robot! It's taking off!
Dr. Quest: Now.
Jonny: Oh, I hope it works, dad.
Dr. Quest: Son, it's gotta work.
[The Para-Power Ray fires.]
Dr. Quest: More power.
[The aircraft drops.]
Jonny: You got it, dad!
Hadji: Hurray!
Dr. Quest: Okay, Race. Kill the generator.
[The aircraft crashes.]
Crash site[]
Race: Well, doctor, your Para-Power Ray gun really did the job.
Dr. Quest: Too good, Race. It needs more work and more testing.
Jonny: You sound disappointed, dad.
Dr. Quest: I am, in a way. The Para-Power Ray should have just brought the thing down, not destroyed it.
Race: Well, at least it brought it down.
Dr. Quest: Yes, thank heaven, but I'd have liked to have seen that robot close up.
[Bandit runs into the wreckage and pulls at cables. He barks.]
Race: Looks like Bandit salvaged something. It's the robot's eye.
Dr. Quest: Yes, it is. And someday I'll meet Dr. Zin eye to eye. And when I do...
[The eye flashes and broadcasts Zin's face and voice.]
Dr. Zin: We will meet again soon, Dr. Quest. Very soon. I promise you.
[The eye explodes.]
Dr. Quest: And we'll be ready for you, Zin. You can bet on that.
[Bandit barks and growls at the remains of the robotic eye.]
Race: That's right, Bandit. That's exactly what I was gonna say.
