Mary Celeste is a cargo ship that sank in the Sargasso Sea in November 1872.

The ship was captained by Benjamin Spooner Briggs, whose wife and daughter traveled with him aboard the ship. The first mate was Mr. George.
History[]
In November 1872, the Mary Celeste was two weeks out of New York on its way to Genoa. It's cargo was allegedly seventeen hundred full barrels of rum, but it was actually carrying gold. The first mate Mr. George discovered the gold, and he incited the crew to mutiny. They took control of the ship and left the Captain and his family adrift in a life boat. The ship was then pulled under by a strange light. The first mate survived and later told the story to a man on his death bed; the man who heard it later told Derek Ironwood.
